Program Description:
Evelio Figueroa“To experience other cultures, meet new characters and to expand my knowledge of this life was my craving.”  -Evelio Figueroa

Made possible by the generosity of donors who have endowed this scholarship in his name, the Evelio Figueroa Memorial Study Abroad Scholarship is for undergraduate students at Binghamton University who wish to acquire a deep understanding of another culture through study abroad but do not have the financial ability to cover the cost of the experience.  Recipients of the award are expected to demonstrate their readiness to immerse themselves fully in the culture, and preferably the language of another country, and to bring back the benefits of what they have learned as service to their community.

Evelio Figueroa, a Binghamton University psychology major, studied abroad at Ben Gurion University in Israel during spring 2000.  Evelio experienced study abroad as a profoundly meaningful journey of self-discovery and discovery of other peoples.  Already bilingual in Spanish and English, Evelio studied the Hebrew language and Jewish history.  For him, the quest to become trilingual, to wrestle with more than one religious tradition, and to grasp humanity in all of its complexities was irresistible. He returned to Binghamton University deeply appreciative of his experiences and committed to helping others to cross the barriers that separate cultures and individuals.  The Evelio Figueroa Memorial Scholarship program endeavors to carry his vision forward.
